The behaviourist ideally has both academic qualifications and experience. They carefully assess the dog in context, and then work out a plan with the owner to assist. So, when you ask for help: –

  • Your vet deals with medical problems, some of which may relate to behaviour where medication is indicated.
  • Your trainer assists with teaching your dog behaviour, to which he will respond well if there are no underlying issues.
  • Your behaviourist deals with the causes of unwanted behaviour and helps the owner to address these.

There is, of course, overlapping, and professionals are usually happy to work together to develop the best solutions.

Mutt Matters

This is the page that speaks for shelter dogs. Of course, dogs DO speak, but not always in a way that humans understand!

Claire Atkinson is a qualified psychologist and dog behaviourist, who specializes in helping dogs and owners understand each other. The more we can know about this relationship, the happier dogs and owners will be.

Through education and communication, we can help the lives of those who cannot speak in human terms. We can reduce suffering, address cruelty, and make a special difference – one dog at a time.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. Mahatma Ghandi 1869-1948
